The revised plans will create a new Marrickville Metro, offering a greater variety of shops, a market, improved dining and more open spaces.
The revised plans:
- Reduce the floor space of the original proposal by 22 per cent
- Reduce traffic flows as a result of the reduced floor area
- Retain Smidmore Street as a public road open to vehicle traffic – with shops and landscaping on either side
- Significantly reduce development above the existing shopping centre to the north-east, including removing the spiral ramp near the corner of Victoria Road and Murray Street
- Retain all existing, mature trees including all Lemon Scented Gums in Smidmore Street, the majority of fig trees along Murray Street and replant trees along Edinburgh Road
- Reduce the number of new car parking spaces from 715 to 528
- Retain the existing vehicle ramp in Murray Street – and relocate the new loading dock on Murray Street further south.
The plans will also deliver:
- A greater variety of high quality shops and services to create a convenient shopping location for the local community
- Landscaping to improve the centre’s surrounds and to highlight heritage features, such as the Mill House
- More natural light and outdoor areas to improve the centre’s ambience
- Boost the local economy by delivering more jobs – during the construction period as well as long term retail employment opportunities
- Improved connectivity to surrounding streets.
